On View

Nov 14–Dec 05, 2014

Pleated Field // Neil Griess opened November 14th, 2014 in the Wanda D. Ewing Gallery and ran through November 2014.

PLEATED FIELD is a mobile architecture, a tool kit for social adventure. Interlocking platforms set the stage for various postures and movements, ergonomically activating the public sphere. A collection of lifts and carts ensure a fluid installation for users. Standardized component parts fit together snugly and come apart easily. The only boundaries are inscribed in the terrain, as the system is endlessly repeatable. Join us in a barn raising for the 21st century.

NEIL GRIESS is an Omaha artist who has creative types in his familial ranks, people invested in visual, literary, and/or performance-based modes of expression. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011, and has participated in group shows in Omaha, Lincoln, Kansas City, and New York. Pleated Field marks his first solo exhibition.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Cities are artifacts. They are physical expressions of systems beyond our individual control. Under these conditions, it can be difficult to pinpoint the forces that are acting on us, and to see how they shift our intentions. In my work, I consider how the built environment sets the terms for our movements and interactions, how it reflects what we think is possible as a society. When we feel that there is no room for our impulses, we fall out of step with the anticipated functions of the landscape. We become aware of our surroundings. It can be a transformative moment.
