Studio 24 FAQs

Is the residency open to artists living in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area?

The Studio 24 Residency is a regional/national-focused residency for artists living at least 60 miles from our facility in Omaha, Nebraska. Artists living in the greater-Omaha area are invited to apply for our annual Inside/Outside Fellowship program. The Union does not currently have live/work studio space available for local artists.

How old do you need to be in order to participate in the program?

Studio 24 residents must be 21 years of age at the time their residency is scheduled to begin.

What is the process for inviting artists? Who is involved in the decision-making process and how will artists be communicated with about the opportunity?

The Studio 24 Residency is currently open by invitation. We have chosen to invite artists to remove barriers that may come with a traditional application or juried selection process. Participating artists are able to recommend future artists. Artists who are interested in the residency may submit an inquiry through this form.

Email will be the primary form of communication for updates about the residency.

Is the Kali Baker Studio and The Union’s facility ADA accessible? What support systems do you have in place for disabled artists?

The Union is committed to creating spaces, programs and events that are accessible to everyone. As with the rest of our facility, the Kali Baker Studio meets, or exceeds, the requirements for ADA accessibility. If you have specific questions about accessibility at The Union, please contact our Events + Projects Manager, Kat Fackler at kat@u-ca.org or (402) 933-3161.

Can a residency last for fewer than three months?

Three months is the optimal amount of time for this residency. However, on a case-by-case basis, the duration of the residency can be flexible. At minimum, prospective residents should be able to stay for eight weeks.

What security measures are in place for residents?

The Kali Baker Studio has two separate entrances in addition to a door that opens into our main facility and the studio has its own alarm panel. Residents will be given their own alarm code, access fob, and key – and only members of our facilities team can access the space, which will only occur with advance notice and permission from the artist.

Can I bring my pet?

The Union for Contemporary Art is unable to accommodate pets at this time. Service animals are permitted.

Can I bring my spouse, partner or dependent(s)?

The Union for Contemporary Art is unable to accommodate spouses, partners or dependents at this time.

Do artists have to be an U.S citizen or permanent legal resident?

Yes. Residents will be required to provide The Union with a signed residency agreement, which include a W9 form, before we’ll be able to provide them with any of the honorarium or stipend payments.

Do residents need to have a BFA, MFA or formal training to participate?

Absolutely not. The Studio 24 Residency is open to any BIPOC creative at any career level. The residency is open to artists working in interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and/or visual arts.

Can I smoke in the Kali Baker Studio?

No. The entire Union campus, including the Kali Baker Studio, is a smoke-free environment.

If I don’t drive, how would I be able to get groceries or supplies during my stay?

We provide our residents with access to a Shipt membership so that artists can order groceries and supplies from nearby businesses and grocery stores. The Union is also located on a main bus line, and residents can ask our Exhibitions + Residencies Manager to assist with occasional errands. Residents are also welcome to use a portion of their travel stipend for Lyft or Uber services.

Will The Union cover the costs of shipping any supplies or equipment I need from my home?

No, but residents are welcome to use their material stipend to cover shipping expenses.

If I don’t want to fly to Omaha, can I use the travel stipend for a different mode of travel?

For sure! Omaha is accessible via Amtrak, and residents who decide to drive to Omaha will have parking available on-site.
